Meetings have become an inevitable part of the workday for every business owner or department head. There are meetings with clients, meetings with employees, and appointments with suppliers and business advisors. Almost everyone has suffered through too
many meetings that take up too much time and accomplish too little.
A 2005 Microsoft survey revealed that, cumulatively, two out of every five working days are
spent on pointless meetings, poor communications and unclear objectives. Executives report
they average 23 hours each week in meetings and 7. 8 hours of them—that’s 34 percent—are
unnecessary and/or poorly run. Blue-collar workers spend an average of 5. 6 hours in meetings weekly and cite 69 percent of them are ineffective—defined as scheduled at inopportune
times, started late and run overtime, containing tangential conversations that are off-focus
and irrelevant, and failing to reach a decision or make any progress.
How do unproductive meetings affect us? Most workers who are expected to attend meetings on a regular basis admit to daydreaming ( 91 percent), missing parts of or entire meetings ( 95 percent), bringing other work to meetings ( 73 percent), and 39 percent say they
have dozed off during meetings. One might be inclined to snicker at those statistics, but we
shouldn’t have to accept the status quo when it comes to leading or attending meetings. Begin
a revolution in your own organization.

your overall sales effort.
Meetings of distinction
There’s nothing quite like the announcement of an impromptu meeting to evoke a distinct
feeling of dread and despair in employees. Most people have a strong desire to accomplish
work goals but, with their time stretched thin already due to fewer colleagues to share the
load, meetings especially affect even superstars and work-horses adversely. For the driven
worker, poorly-planned meetings are an annoying interruption to their productivity and
therefore should be carefully choreographed.
So, how do you make sure you’re not killing morale or job satisfaction with your meetings?
You might consider seeking the counsel of a trusted and experienced business advisor or
trainer to educate meeting leaders on techniques for becoming more effective communicators. Having an outside set of eyes provide feedback and guidance often reveals a unique
perspective that is sometimes overlooked when one becomes too close to a problem. More
immediately, consider the following six seldom-considered tips for mastering your meetings.
